Plátanos con Ajonjolí is a simple and delicious Latin American dish that mixes the natural sweetness of ripe plantains with the nuttiness of sesame grains (ajonjolí). It is a very unique dish that showcases the different flavours of the tropics and is also short to prepare.

Step 1

Peel the ripe plantains and cut them into bending slices about 1/2-inch thick.

Step 2

In a dry skillet, toast the sesame seeds (ajonjolí) over medium heat, stirring frequently until golden brown. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes.

Step 3

Melt the butter in a separate pan over medium heat. If you're using a dairy-free choice, use that instead. Add the plantain slices to the skillet, sprinkle them with brown sugar, and add a pinch of salt. Sauté the plantains on each side for about 3-4 minutes or until they become caramelized and golden.

Step 4

Once the plantains are cooked and caramelized, spray the toasted sesame seeds. You can also dust the plantains with ground cinnamon if you like. Serve the Plátanos con Ajonjolí as a side dish, dessert, or a tasty snack.
