Steps

Step 1

In a bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Parmesan cheese, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix everything well to ensure that all the ingredients are evenly distributed. Once the mixture is well combined, form it into meatballs that are about 1 inch in diameter.

Step 2

In a pan over medium heat, preheat some olive oil. Once the skillet is hot, add the meatballs and cook them until they are browned on all sides and cooked through. This should take about 10-12 minutes. When finished, take the meatballs out of the skillet and reserve them for another time.

Step 3

In the same skillet, you can add sliced onions and minced garlic. Cook them until the onions are caramelized and golden brown. Once that's done, sprinkle flour over the onions and garlic, stirring to coat them evenly. After that, you can gradually add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.

Step 4

Make sure the cooked meatballs are well covered before adding them to the onion sauce. To ensure that the flavours meld perfectly, simmer them for a further five to seven minutes.

Step 5

Preheat the oven's broiler. Slice the baguette into sub-sized pieces. Top each sub with shredded Gruyere cheese, onions, and meatballs. When the cheese is bubbling, broil it.

Step 6

After cooking, remove the meatballs from the oven and set aside to cool somewhat. You can then serve your French Onion Meatball Subs with a side of au jus, which can be used for dipping.
